Many new photos of raging 'anarchist' Tony Fitzgerald and Wheezing Walter T Mudd have come to light thru a mutual friend Dominic O'Donnell. Dom played with Mort during the 80s and has been responsible for the majority of photos from our second reunion at The Mercantile Hotel.

1973 Wally and Lynne in Batman Lane

While writing my memoirs 'Terrace Houses', when I embarked upon my journey through Taylor Square, my jug band days, I came across a negative in my collection of old photos. I took it along for development, and, for the sum of two dollars Iwas thrilled to receive the above photo! I located Red McKelvie on Myspace, Red had written a tune he had named, "Wally's Song", dare I play it? .. I did and I cried, it was a tribute to the days at Taylor Square ... Wally Mudd, his brother Paul and friends.

WHITTY'S WINE BAR, Oxford Street, Taylor Square .. After a day's work at the Sydney County Council, I traded my uniform for a faded pair of denims and a tee-shirt. Cutting across Hyde Park, I headed up Oxford Street towards the Court House. Whitty's was directly opposite this grand old building. Before entering Whitty's, my port of call was Cecil B Fardouli's, (the delicatessen next door) where I purchased a wizened stick of cabanossi that snap broke and oozed oil, a crusty bread roll and a lump of cheese. These items were promptly washed down with a large large mug of apple cider. Quite a few ciders were consumed before the Dogs began work and anticipation heightened.

The charismatic Warwick Wyld (Wheezin' Walter T Mudd, Wally, suffered from asthma, his trusty spray never far from reach) on vocals and harp, his brother Paul 'Doggie' Wyld keyboard extraordinaire and the dapper Terry Wilkins on bass. Ahh yes, Terry a Libran, with his clean jeans, clean shoes and a clean, neat moustache announcing he had changed his pickin' style from a standard plectrum stroke to an upward finger-picking fashion. Over the next five years many members came and went: Red Mc Kelvie and Chinese Chris on lead, Charlie Watts, Jim Crowley and Daryl MacKenzie on drums. Mort sat in on occasions treating us to his soulful harp and tempting us with his jug.

By nine they were ripping into a great repetoire of blues and jug: "What's that Smells like Fish Mama", "Mystery Train", "Messin' with the Kid", "Dust my Broom", "Stealin", "Walking Blues". I soon learnt their repetoire and jammed along with Wally after the gig.

By 1969 the Dogs lived in 290 South Dowling Street, that is Jim Crowley, Wally, Terry and Paul along with Sue Challis, Allannah, Stuart West and Steve James. I took up temporary residence on top of a sideboard under the stairs!! The house had an incredible buzz with a different vibe in each room. Terry had the downstairs front room and people gathered there listening to Terry's latest find (music wise) . 'twas there I met Anna, Red McKelvie, Bob McGowan, Cathy James, Swannee, Martin James, Lindsay Bourke, Hamburger Joe, John A Bird, Sandy, Phil Manning, Shane Duckham, Neil Bramley, Dave and Moya Sturdy (twins), Pip, Adrian Rawlins .. laughing, laughing, laughing (at the time I assumed that is what happened to one after a few years in this amazing environment).

The house extended out the back onto a courtyard and then into another terrace (the number escapes me now) dwelt Sonya Kereopa, Larry Knight, Peter Gatehouse, Peter Gardiner, Alan Johnson, Dave Cook and Alan Johnson.

Steven 'Sudsy' Sutcliff arrived one night, paranoid as hell after listeng to The Rolling Stones 'Satanic Majesty', he was convinced that the Stones were sending him messages via the album, he placed a glass to the wall and 'listened' to voices in the wall being transmitted by the D's (detectives). Poor Sudsy, his life ended abruptly from an overdose, we had little knowledge of schizophrenia in those days.

My time I spent sharing riffs, tunes and blues info good clean healthy fun. However, one rainy Sunday afternoon someone suggested we have a raffle. Names were placed into a hat, I drew Steve James. Steve and I had always been good mates so we were happy with this arrangement. News got out around the scene regarding the 'raffle'. Friend Errol Wood visited, he was not amused and moved me off my prime position on the sideboard and into his flat in Alison Road, Randwick. The rent was seventeen dollars, my share was three.

Alison Road soon became a 'place to be' inmates included, Anne Kelso, Wally Mudd, Keri Phillips, Steve James, Paul Wyld, Bob and Kathy McGowan, Bobbi, Brian Dewhurst, Crazy Wayne Barnes, Neil Bramley, Gary Ross, Virgo Doug, Ian McIlvray, Ross Darmody, Charlie Watts ..

Before heading off to Taylor Square Errol loved listening to Beck's 'Truth' LP .. it was the flavour of the month. Primed, we did a quick crawl of Oxford Street checking out the scene. The Beauchamp, Oxford and Albany Hotels .. a look see into Whitty's to see if the boys (SWD) had set up, then down to French's, which usually featured The Foreday Riders or The Battersea Heroes. The Riders, were predominately blues roots band whilst the Heroes were the creme de la creme of jug band music .. Terry Darmody, Dennis 'Spiderman' Burke and Mark Butler. The Heroes were the real thing, kazoo, washboard and tea-chest bass! We spent most nights trundling back and forth from Whittys to Frenchs .. anyone remember the really smelly fish shop?

After midnight we'd grab a Chico Roll from the Chew and Spew and hike on out to the Greenwood Tree Hotel in Paddington to catch Jeff St John (and hopefully an eyeful of Peter Anson). I recall the night my Graham's friendship ring flew off my finger across the crowded room never to be seen again.

I took over Sue Challis's waitressing position at the Yellow Cab Restaurant (off Victoria Street), Wally was in the habit of dropping in for dinner 'on the house'. I made enough each night in tips to pay for my ciders and cigarettes. Around this time Wally moved into Alison Road and camped on the lounge-room floor. Charlie Watts reappeared around this time.

In 1973 my husband and I welcomed Wally into our home in Batman Lane, Surrey Hills, (a narrow lane-way not far from Nithsdale Street. He then 'vanished', or maybe we did! Reappearing in 1976 at my daughter's naming party in Newtown .. the last memory I have of him is at a pub jam in Surry Hills in the late '70s. When I commenced writing about my journey growing up in King's Cross .. I felt a wave of joy pass through me as I remembered my jug band days and Wally Mudd .......... where WAS Wall?

Warwick Wyld's and his brother Paul arrival on the scene at Taylor Square is best summed up in Red McKelvie's track .. "Wally's Song". Wheezin' Walter 'T' Mudd aka Wally Mudd will be remembered for his contribution to the Sydney Underground music scene from 1966 and onwards.

RED McKELVIE "Wally's Song"

Wally, harmonica attached, hat perched on top of a head of curly hair, first caught my eye at Rhubarbs, (a 'happening' cavern-like venue in Douglass Lane, off Liverpool Street in the city). I was attracted to his quirky movements and staccato singing, but the wail coming from his harp and the passionate rawness of the blues sound emanating from this bunch of wild looking guys was beyond compare . . I had to meet them!

Tony Fitzgerald akak Mort Fist was want to drag one from pillar to post ,and this Saturday afternoon was no different. "Come on" he said. "Got a surprise for you."
Catching a bus from North Sydney to Wynyard and hopping off at Bondi Junction in silence heightened my anticipation. Entering a huge terrace house, (42) Denison Street, we were greeted by Wally Mudd, and I was so nervous. Need not have been as Wal, it transpired, was extremely shy.

He was charismatic, his enthusiasm and love of music, particularly the blues and jug, endeared him to many.

Some time later he relocated to 290 South Dowling Street.. Who lived there, who was visiting and who was transient was not always clear. the folk I remember are: Steve James, Terry Wilkins, Stuart West, Paul Wyld, Jim Crowley, Larry Knight, Sonya Kereopa, Sue Challis and Allannah.

Wal and I formed a friendship which endured the journey throughout the Taylor Square era and beyond, we shared our love of music and our ups and downs, spending mosts nights singing and playing guitar. I was enamoured with the personae that was, 'Wally Mudd'. Wally was not one to talk at any length about himself, his personal feelings or views. I don't know if anyone ever really knew Warwick Wyld, but, one could always catch him blowing his harp with any band around the traps.

I received emails, photos, comments and recollections of this period and was able to reunite with old friends and acquaintances, including Errol and Phil Wood, Danny Groves, Sue Toohey, Terry Darmody, Neil Smith, Alan Johnson, Peter Nehill, Larry Knight, Red McKelvie, Peter Gatehouse, Allannah, Dave Miller, Judy Miller, Jacquie McGarry, Peter 'Izzy Foreal' Knox ..... ?

"hi Lynne um I went to Australia 13 Aug 1967 haha I'm pretty sure I didn't actually MEET Wally until the I showed up at the Oxford Hotel on a Thursday night to play with the SWD's maybe 2 weeks before that Shane Duckham let me and Bob? and a NZ drummer Warwick Lee play a set in one of their breaks at the Oxford. Bob ? ( lived with his mum in Jersey Rd Woollahra) great guy must have arranged it. Terry Wilkins was playing gtr with Shane Duckham abt a week later Terry showed up to a party at our flat in Liverpool St and we jammed a bit on acoustic gtrs then the following week he came by and asked me would I play with the SWD's at the Oxford that week 'cos their gtr player had gone to Melbourne and couldn't get back to do the gig so yeah I went there and met Wally and Darryl McKenzie haha and away we went they asked me to stay on and I guess that wuz the break I'd been waiting for ! so I guess the short answer is I met Wally at the Oxford abt late Jan 1968.

I only saw Waldo that one time and from the audience he did have straight fair hair and played geetar as I remember I had a chat with Lan last ngt in the course of the conversation I remembered that I had seen SWD's play at the Oxford before I joined them Paul was playing an upright piano at the windows end and his girl friend was sitting on the piano watching him play Rod was the bass-player the drummer was a guy called 'Hutch' in the photo you have of Rod I can see by the shape of the windows 'curved' at the top that is upstairs at the 'Oxford Hotel' this would've been late 1967 but I didn't know anyone yet.

.. the geetar player I filled in for haha 4 abt 8 months wuz 'Chinese Chris' and when i went to the UK he got his gig back and that's him in photo of 'Matchbox' EX S W Dogs taken at the Kings X Bar BQ and you're in the photo all good stuff I met Waldo only one time I went to the 'Ball Pants' in the Cross and he wuz playing that ngt the name Rob Jamieson doesn't ring any bells I'm sorry Peter Knox told me once that he gigged with Waldo at the "Ball Pants' great to hear from ya cheers .. Allannah Wooloughan .. " I think I first met Wally through Terry Wilkins - we were at the Oxford I one Sat afternoon with the Sons playing - my memory is pretty shot. Terry would do his usual 'table hopping' chatting to everyone including musos. We really loved the music scene in the 60s at Taylor Square. Wally and I were always good friends. I wonder whatever happened to Wally's girlfriend Trisha who went to Hong Kong c1966/7? ... Allannah Wooloughan"

I have located Red McKelvie's site on Myspace. Noticed a track called "Wally's Song" .. dare I play it? I did and it made me weep. If you were in Taylor Square in the 60s and knew Wally and Paul Wyld this song will be blow you away.

"These photos were taken at the Hebron Hall Darlinghurst right across road from Langley St okay hmmm Chris was born Apr 71 we were only there at most 5 months so it's 1971 (there was a little park behind it on Palmer St I used to take Chris there to give Lan a break) we lived at 22 Langley St in a small house John A Bird and Sandy had it before us and he organised for us to take over the lease after him and Sandy found other digs the band was just put together for Wayne and Lyn's wedding we don't appear to have a bass-player 'Ace' Follington on drums Doggie, Wally and me it's abt Aug 1971 I reckon the girl singing must be a guest who was there at the wedding I've been waiting since 1992 for these photo's !! I hope they come out alright I'm SO lucky to have these photos, have more will send them to you asap cheers 4 now Red"

In Search of The Starving Wild Dogs ..

Paul 'Doggie' Wyld aka The Wizard was Wally Mudd's extremely talented brother. Paul was rather mild mannered and into Vogel bread and soy. Together they took 'Taylor Square by storm' forming a jug cum blues band an aptly naming it The Starving Wild Dogs Piano Band. I first met Paul in '67 he was a Meher Baba devotee. I haven't seen Paul since he joined Blackfeather in 1970.

Terry, the dapper bass player in the Starving Wild Dogs joined The Flying Circus around 1970. I browsed the 'net and found a link under Bradley's Bouncers, to Terry Wilkins, and immediately contacted him.

Found this article:- 'Sporting a double bass, Terry has played in various 'swing bands' over the last 40 years. He was nominated for the Maple Leaf Award last year, he was successful in his field. Toronto Blues Society Lifetime Achievement Award: Terry Wilkins, Danny Brooks, Michael Fonfara, Alec Fraser, Amos Garrett, Tom Lavin, Big Dave McLean, Ellen McIlwaine, Joe Murphy, Chris Whiteley, Ken Whiteley.

'Upright Bass Terry Wilkins is a Toronto based musician, composer, bandleader, arranger, producer and teacher. A native of Sydney, Australia he arrived in Toronto in 1971 with Aussie pop band, Flying Circus, and since then has worked with many Canadian and international artists from Lighthouse to Big Sugar as well as Rough Trade and David Wilcox. He has also backed many visiting artists such as Dr. John, Eddie Cleanhead Vinson, Maria Muldaur, John Hammond, Levon Helm and Son Seals.

His musical range is wide and varied with an emphasis on roots music especially blues and swing with some interesting adventures in Caribbean styles.

Currently Terry works with Bradley and The Bouncers. He previously worked with Sophia Perlman and The Vipers who released a CD entitled 'Once Smitten'. He wrote, co-produced and arranged tracks on the CD. He has just completed a CD for national treasure Bob Snider. Production credits include Juno nominated Chris Whiteley; Blues Party and Raoul and The Big Time; Big Time Blues (2001)and Cold Outside (2004) as well as The Legendary Miles Johnson featuring Raoul Bhaneja and Graham Guest released in 2006.

He also completed a CD playing bass and producing for Dennis Aubrey, his younger brother who is based in Australia (2007).'

Big Sugar was a Canadian blues-rock band, active from 1991 to 2004. This CD features vocalist and guitarist Gordie Johnson, Terry Wilkins on bass and drummer Al Cross.

I have a copy of the CD and reviewing it was my pleasure it kicks off with Molly Johnson crooning "Round Midnight" and closes with Hogey Carmichael's "Stardust". The tracks in between make a mighty tasty sandwich filling indeed.

Monk's "Beshma Swing", an upbeat "Come Back Baby", "Goodbye Train, "Groundhog", "Nowhere to Go", "Just about Sunrise" and some bluesrootsy stuff including: "Devil Got my Woman", "Motherless Children", "Sleep in Late" and "So Many Roads".

Certainly good listening. Terry has kindly consented to my putting up a track or two. What a difficult choice! .. Lynne

"Hi Lynne, we played at the Kings Cross Bar B Que for abt 3 weeks we were 3 pce then Terry Wilkins, Darryl Mckenzie and me we went to 'Adam's Apple' Joan Whitty's club cnr Crown and Oxford Sts after Tully left where we become 4 pce when Keith Barr joined us I don't think we ever played in the 'Cross' again as Quill. After Terry left and joined the Flying Circus, Peter Knox joined as bass player I think eventually Darryl and Keith Barr went off to form a band and as far as I know Quill ended then Peter Knox may remember better than me? I joined up with some 'kiwi' mates Claude Papesch, Murray Grindlay plus 'Ace' Follington we called ourselves haha Savage Rose and we played up the Cross at the Electric Circus, Whiskey Au Go Go and the Hawaaiian Eye, Castlereagh St. and the Here disco North Sydney. Blow me down, a word from Alan Johnson, who I met in the late 60s at the Beauchamp Hotel. In 1976, Alan was MC at Nikala's Naming Party. He is in contact with Larry Knight, Dave Cook and Peter Gatehouse. Dave had his fifteen minutes of fame when he streaked across the field during a footy match. My last recollection of Peter is at my home in Waterloo with Christa (Cookson??)!

I first made the acquaintance of Bob McGowan and Terry Darmody in the mid 60s. Bob was performing with The Sons of Agamemnon at Whitty's Wine Bar, and, Terry in the Battersea Heroes at The Last Straw (Neutral Bay). I have recently reacquainted with Terry and Bob. Have also touched base with Mark 'Basil' Butler, John Taylor and Tony Burkys. I had the pleasure of meeting Tony Burkys at Taylor Square in the 60s first reunion at Manly Jazz Festival in 2009.

An excerpt regarding their gig, Australia Day 1975, under the Bridge...

.. 'They were young and imbued with the spirit of the age, and crazy enough to believe that they could make real music, and earn a living doing it. Their influences were diverse, from the crassest modern pop to the rawest Delta blues, a creative patchwork of 20th century popular music. Their motto wasn't, but could have been: “It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing.” And swing they did.

To their diverse musical smorgasbord they added original material hewn from the same sources, drawing on that bumblefooted road crew, Mark (Basil) Butler and John (The Doctor) Dease, who revealed some talent as lyricists. My mission to locate the Starving Wild Dogs has proven to be one of the most exciting ventures I have ever undertaken. I now visit Sydney on a regular basis and have recently returned from the Taylor Square in the 60s second reunion held this year at the Mercantile Hotel, The Rocks.

Sadly, Wally and Paul Wyld, Jim Crowley, Mort Fist, Ross Darmody, Martin James, Shane Duckham, Lesley Armstrong, Neil Bramley, Wayne Barnes, Rod 'Beachhead' Jeffery and Richard Ludbrook have passed on and were there in spirit.

Taylor Square in the 60s held its second reunion on Sunday November 7, 2010 at The Mercantile Hotel, 25 George Street, The Rocks. Pocket rocket, Miss Lilo Blyton, fiddled her way into our hearts inside, while Errol Wood, Terry Darmody, Ralph Graham and Ross J Waters entertained us outside with many of the old favourites. The reunion continued on into the night at the Manhatton Lounge with host Frank Macias.

The guests included: Denise Tsolakis from Cremorne '64, my two oldest friends Diane Willard and Sue Toohey. Berry Street crew: Errol Wood and Ross J Waters and their wives Fionna and Carolyn, Frank Cayley, Phil Wood, Dave and Judy Miller and their sister Fran, who was not part of the Taylor Square scene, howeve, was a dancer on Bandstand. Gus McNeil and friend Margaret, Teri Moodie and friend Bill, Sonya Kereopa, Ralph Graham, Peter Nehill and Karl Rooney were certainly an added surprise. Terry Darmody and his wife Deidree and his mother-in-law Beth. Dominic O'Donnell, Krisee Oliver and Mary Jane Boyce .. Lilo Blyton, Brian Wakefield, David Rowlands from the Unknown Blues & friend, Ken Gooding, Anna Henry brought a crew along, Leo Duffy, Dave Shultz and his friend, Mick Duggan, and Lenny Paterson. Of course, Dave McDermott was also present and accounted for ahhh will add if I have overlooked anyone.

Well, one year I would love to attend a reunion though I have had a life full of love and security I feel a real sense of loss having never really known my 'dad', coz I like to think we would have got on as adults and I love the music."

Thank you Rachaell, that is the one of the nicest things anyone has ever said to me. I hung off his left leg for a while, though he did manage to escape occasionally. He had pockets of friends everywhere I have enjoyed the journey and met many people. Glad I could share this with you. The reunions are now to be held annually in memory of Wally, Paul, Jim and Mort. I have so much data to share and hope to put up a comprehensive website soon ... with a recollection of 'a week in the life of the SWD' .. so much info. to share

Lenny Paterson has some old tapes of the Dogs, Red and Peter Knox. Red mentioned that there are also films of them at the Oxford Tavern in existence, hoping to hear more on this soon.

Teri Moodie .. I'd love to catch up, Lynne! Reading your comments and your way with words, which evoke all kinds of lost pictures and scents and sounds has made me wonder why on earth we weren't better friends back when. So many hundreds of hours in the same place just wasted!

"Thanks Lynne, I arrived in Sydney from Western Australia in the very early 60s after a brief stint working as a compositor on the old "Canberra Times" in the days before there was a Lake Burley Griffin. It was in Sydney that I first met Chris Cruise, the man I've sung and played with for more than 40 years, off and on. I'd been mucking about on ukulele and/or guitar since I was a kid and in my early teens and, thanks to my Celtic background - mixed with quite a bit of other stuff on my Mother's side – had been expected to sing and/or recite at family do's ever since I can remember.

Had my first experience of Southern music when I heard Big Bill Broonzy, Leadbelly and Jelly Roll Morton on 78s back in 1956. Nothing was the same after that. Back to my thread. In WA I'd been playing pubs and coffee lounges since my late teens. Back in the 50s and very early 60s, coffee lounges - all called Chez something - were the only places where you could get a regular gig if you played 'alternative' music. They were later emulated for a while by the 70s proliferation of wine bars, the older 'traditional' versions of which - along with their biggest seller, 'seven-penny dark' or the 'house grouse' - were frowned upon by polite (i.e. straight) society. Anyone remember the old Rocket Range down in the Haymarket?

I went to Tassie for a while and met John A Bird (my favourite piano man of all time), Rainer Gartz and others and re-engaged with Chris. Performances with Chris put me in touch with Charlie Watts, Wally and Phil Manning. Phil was still at school and Charlie and Wally may have been – it's all a bit hazy – it was a long time ago and I drank a lot of cheap booze back then. Back In Sydney, Chris, Lindsay and I formed the Ned Kelly Memorial Jug Stompers at about the same time as the Original Battersea Heroes - g'day Terry - got going. As I remember it, The OBH was probably the best 'sophisticated' jug ensemble ever to play anywhere since the 1930s.

Taylor Square, Darlo, the Cross, was something else back then. Who remembers those three art deco flat blocks, up near the Cross, named Faith, Hope and Charity? I lived in Charity for a while. It was sort of a hand-to-mouth existence but a hell of a lot of fun. The 'real' folkies - and no slur on them intended - got all the folk gigs and the rest of the world was more interested in rock and its variations than it was in old-time music. Cheap meals at Ros Norton's and the Balkan – I can still taste the Balkan's Pola Pola – and Whitty's Wine Bar before Cec and Joan Whitty sold up and as it was before wine bars became 'in' and expensive and sold mostly Strongbow cider (blowflies' piss for anyone whoever had Mercury straight from the keg in Hobart when it was still owned by the Huon Cry Fruit Juice Company) Martin's came on the scene, opening up just down the road. For a while John Bird played piano with me at Whitty's on Saturday mornings with Hard-Hearted Hannah sleeping on the piano top as an added attraction. Whitty's annual picnic to Shark Island was always a hoot. The original Wayside Chapel and Ted Noffs - Chris and I sang at a wedding there.

ALL the while I played and worked wherever and at whatever I could. Mines, slaughterhouses, fish and chip shop, sawmill, sideshow spruiker, remote-area construction, cook, seaman, newspaper, jobbing printer. You name it, it all added to the music and the mindset. My childhood background gave me music and songs that I could whip out to suit the occasion whether I was playing just for beers or to a paying audience. I've never felt embarrassed about singing "Old Shep", Galway Bay" or "Maggie" when the occasion demanded; though what my grandmothers' generation would have thought about Maggie played in sort of blues-guitar style would be anyone's guess. I've been playing like that for so long it gets into everything.

FOR a while I was in a group with a psych nurse (who now has a respectable persona so I'd better not name him), drummer, the late Ed Hales, and front man/mouth harpist John Scope who may or may not - and I hope the latter - be the late. Nurse and I played resonator guitars and did recitations of current hits (e.g. "She loves You") and pseudo-musical versions of 50s rock; bad stuff like "Black Denim Trousers", "Midnight Bus" and Nervous Norvice's "Ape Call" and "Transfusion". We were named The Teen Angels: Acned music of the 50s and got a full page in the rock newspaper of the day - my mind's going, I can't remember what it was and it's packed away somewhere. Shit! I've also done the occasional thing singing with trad jazz bands.

I spent eight years in EnZed again where I was quite well known on the folk scene and came back to Oz in 79, worked at the Government Printer in Harris Street for a while then went bush, back to Tas then my old home WA and now here. Still playing of course.AllAll the while I picked up influences and experience and adding to what I played and sang. I can probably, if pushed, play and sing something over 1000 songs. Mainly because if I can't remember words or tune exactly, I improvise. I am grateful for the influences some great musos have had on me, John A Bird, Ron Davis, Chris Cruise, Garry Lambert (love playing with Garry), the late Keith Finlayson (one of Australia's most gifted and traditional blues and old-timey players, a man most people have never heard of) and a host of others.

Many of my old friends and acquaintances have left us now, but I still remember faces and names. Wally stays in my mind as he was in the 60s - age shall not weary them, or the years condemn. Jules Sackville, Take-a-Drink Taylor and a host of other characters I knew as friends; they all were part of my rich life.

I'm grateful for the friendships I had and have and, perhaps most of all, a couple of things that were said to me a few years ago. Funny, I've lived a lot of my adult life raging against my existence and trying to express my feelings in music. I knew I'd never reach any great heights because I was (and am) too undisciplined, hate authority and have always been too shy to sell myself. So I just went on the way I went, enjoying playing for myself and for the effect it had on other people. I've always doubted my own ability - I lack self-confidence something shocking - and so I could say to myself "Well at least I've bloody enjoyed it." Then in the past few years I've been told (and have read) things by more than a few musos, some of them now quite well known here and in EnZed, and listeners how much they've enjoyed listening to me over the years and, in the case of musicians, the influence I had on them when they were younger. Wow!

"Hi Lynne, Dave Miller here, thank you so much for letting me share Leonie's photos, it was a very emotional experience for me looking at photos of my friends that I hung around with from the age of seventeen. It sure brings back a lot of fond memories whilst at the same time its very sad that some of those friends are no longer with us. How incredibly young they all looked. Mort's brother Ham Fist (Michael) and seriously is that the same Phil Wood I went skiing with two weeks ago, he'd be pretty safe in a police line up (lol). Lyn Carrick and Carolyn Smith (the Beverly Hills girls) whom I first met at the Folk Attic (their names are on that letter from Howlin Wolf) and of course Veronica Wellman and Leonie who were like sisters to me (as if I didn't have enough already - 4) and rescued me from over indulgence at the many parties at 294 South Dowling Street. These were the formative years for me as a teenage boy and I felt privileged to have shared it with such wonderful people.

I'm inspired to dig through my photo collection and send you anything of interest that I can find and happy Birthday for tomorrow. love Dave "

Dave Rowlands ..."Hi Lynne, I am Dave Rowlands, the drummer for The Unknown Blues. I love your blog. Glad we get a mention! Phil Jones lives in the U.S. expensive. I live in Brisbane now and was down in Sydney on holidays late last year. I caught up with some friends I had not seen for forty years. Some great memories came flooding back and yes, they used to go to Beethovens too.

I took my 8 year old son around to see the Rhubarbs (now a Spanish restaurant) and the Beethovens (who knows?) buildings. If only the walls could talk! There were some pretty wild things happening in those days and I had my share too! You have recorded a time that was truly a period of massive social change. We were all able to go out and have a good time without fear and knowing our mates would look after us if there was trouble. To top it off there was some pretty good music to dance to too. I would love to get our band back together for a reunion but there are a couple of hurdles in my way.

Vaughan Bros, organist, passed away, Bill Hodgkisson, bass- disappeared without a trace.

Good news is I have touched base with Chris Brown, guitarist. He is still playing part-time and can come up with a couple of musos to fill in the blank spaces. Chris and I were the founding members of the band. We need to do this soon as we are all getting a bit long in the tooth. If a concert/gig is possible I would give you enough notice to plan to attend if you want to.

On another topic from that era, a lady has emailed me looking for the name of a disco venue down a lane off Pitt St, not far from Town Hall. In early 1967 she used to come with a friend on Saturday afternoons to watch us play. It was in a sort of courtyard at ground level. The front was painted in gaudy colours and there was a string of lights across the front. She remembers it being very dark inside and I remember some large cushions against the walls. I cannot for the life of me remember the name. Neither can Phil or Chris. We left there to fill in for Python Lee Jackson at Rhubarbs. None of that precinct exists now as it was all demolished. By some miracle you may have gone there but I won't hold my hopes too high. I hope this finds you in good health and spirits.

Chris Brown is living in Sydney and plays part-time in a few clubs with a small combo. We hope to get a reunion band together with some musos that Chris knows. He mentioned a Blues Festival in Richmond later this year, but that is to be confirmed.

I haven't played professionally since The Unknown Blues but have a drumkit and can still play. I have been following your blog for about a year and decided that I had better make contact with you and thank you for the work you have put into saving the history of the 60's and reconnecting friends from that time. 2011 is upon us, what a year it has been .. I am sad to say Richard Ludrook (ex Captain Matchbox Whoopee Band) has passed on.

Taylor Square in the 60s has been running now for three years during this time I have contacted many, many fellow Taylor Squarians. We enjoyed our Second Reunion at the Mercantile Hotel in The Rocks.

2010 and I didn't send one card for Chrissy or New Year Eve. I hope you will forgive me for sending this multiple cheerio but I am thinking of each and everyone of you and your many contributions and kind words. New Year's Eve is always a little sad for me. I met my Graham way back in '64/65. God has been watching me and as I was a 'good little girl' he made it possible for Graham's mates to find me. They have been trying to contact me for years and a new exciting chapter is unfolding.

I haven't been able to think let alone write. I was refused permission to put in my window box air conditioner and I had a herd of elephants living upstairs. The elephants have vacated and I have purchased a $500 water cooler, I am at least cool enough to think again. I thought I had lost my abilities! What a wonderful year 2009 was .. My move to Ballina! The Manly, Gosford and Illawarra Festivals, my tour of Woolloomooloo, Paddington and the Cross - so many more contacts. Sadly we lost Lesley 'Mindless' Armstrong and Martin James.

We were kids, experiencing life, such wonderful memories 1964, New Year's Eve at Surf City Sue Toohey, Diane Willard and I met a crew of English migrants we were invited to their terrace house in Glover Street, Cremorne, and 'move in'. Keith Longman, Cliff Bowles, Barry Clover, Mick Adams, Patrick Crow . . were our hosts and parties and music dominated our lives. It was at Glover Street that met Denise Tsolakis, Sandy and Rhonda Nolan at that point they were living in a grand mansion on the Harbour called the Britannic. Denise and I had attended Darlinghurst Public School together!

Over the years there were many newcomers as the boys moved from Cremorne to St Leonards and finally settling in Miller Street, North Sydney with Rick Debenham and Malcolm.

Regular visitors were: Ivor, Roger & Sue, Dave Burrows, Twiggy, Dal (Del) Turner from Buffalo, Greg 'Bear' Hill, Jed, Sandy and Rhonda, Lucie Hedman, Margot Edwards, Noddy, Roma, Bruce, Zorba, Robin, Denise Tsolakis and scores more.

The 'boys' had travelled and settled here from the United Kingdom on The Big Brother Scheme .. there was always an abundance of males. Di and I brought along a succession of females friends and we partied religiously for the next few years. When Graham died, I drifted away and secured a room in a share house in Mosman Junction with Sue Toohey, Diane Willard, Denise Tsolakis, Tony 'Zorba' Bales, Elaine and Brian. This 'crew' partied for many years and drifted apart by 1970. We have had no contact since then.

My introduction to 'real' music: Bob Dylan, John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Leadbelly, Sonny Terry, Broonzy and Brownie McGhee, Dave Van Ronk and Donovan, At nights we partied to The Stones, Kinks, Manfred Mann, Beatles, Animals and Yardbirds. What an amazing journey.

Pat Crow was dying, and apparently, Sandy had been trying to trace me for several years. I am now in touch with Keith Longman, Sandy Adams, Rhonda Randall, Ivor, Robyn Baker, Lucie Hedman, Sue Toohey, Diane Willard and Denise Tsolakis.

My mum identified you I am great, married with three kids and just left Theological College to attend UWS to be a teacher of English and Ancient History. I am 41. I have been writing for years now and recently contacted well over 100 musos from my days in Taylor Square, after Cremorne, . I organized a renunion at Manly Jazz Festival and that was unreal, with faces I hadn't seen for over 40 years all jamming together. I was exhausted and sat back to rest lol

I used to go to PACT Folk at the old Corn Exchange building in Sussex St as a kid of 14-15 to see people such as Starlee Ford, Marg RoadKnight, Jeannie Lewis, East Neasens, Stovepipe Spasm, usually after getting shit-faced at the Maitland & Morpeth and a little later used to drink in the downstairs (Day St) bar on the Fridays at the 'Limejuice Tub' Folk Club and hung with Lynn Harrison, who married a mate of mine from school, John Cutler. We all knew Barry McGloin and his cousin, Chris, Kerry & Ian Cantlay, John & Max McGrath and Bill Morgan way back then.

There was a bloke named Ray Young who sang and played guitar at PACT back then along with another mate, Warren Stewart. There was also Al Head, Graham Lowndes .... Ray was a member of Bullamakanka don't have a clue what's happened to Warren Stewart, or Al Head. Bumped into Al early '80s when I was gigging around the nthn beaches and in the 90s came across, Graham L, Doug Ashdown and Jimmy Stewart when working with Tony Barnard's ALL HAT JAZZ at the Unity Hall in Balmain.

I know Peter Anson from the '80s when I lived in Balmain and often send him jokes, Pete and Roger Janes played at the Unity Hall and I used to sit in with them every weekend I met Wally Mudd at the Alley Cat Wine Bar in Nth Sydney back in the '70s when I was running the Mon. night jam sessions there and he turned up a few times. I had a feeling that Mort Fist had died in the early '80s as I was watching Harvey Fisk's band at the Cat & Fiddle one Sat. and someone came in to say he was dead. Though maybe I have that arse about and it was Mort who came in to say that Wally had died.

I've been sitting in with the Layabouts since around the time of the Hilton bombing as well.

I never did see the Battersea Heroes, although I did know of them and of Terry Darmody. I think the head Layabout, Brian Wakefield may have been in the band at one time.

I met both Mick Leiber and Shane Duckham at times sitting in with the Layabouts - not long before Shane died. Tony Burkys is an old friend. There are many names in Terry's story about the Battersea Heroes that I either know or know of (I'm wondering if Warwick K is Warwick Kennington as a matter of fact).

Many of the other names I do know from the days when I knocked around the Folk Music Circuit between about 1967/8 and the early 70s. I stopped around the time that White Nelly disbanded.

Let's not beat around the bush, eh! The reunion was successful and the meeting culminated in an overwhelming flourish of strings, horns and kazoos. From the onset the venture was dogged by rain and gusty winds, the crew trickled in and out over the three days, wandering around attempting valiantly to make the best of it despite the weather.

Manly Wharf Hotel: Bracing myself for new arrivals

.. here's my old friend from Berry Street, Little Judy Miller and her partner Phil Colson (Foreday Riders, Colin Hay Band). Phil was well prepared for the rain, formidable in his dri -as-a-bone, Judy remarked that I looked exactly the same as in Berry Street, she obviously neglected to bring her spectacles? Roving guest artists The New Orlean Wanderers were next to 'appear' Peter Anson with jacket slung over one shoulder and banjo t'other looked exactly the same as the first time I saw him outside Surf City .. I too had neglected to bring my spectacles. No, seriously except for extra padding and snow on the rooftops we all looked exactly the same!

Next to make an appearance was the inimitable Terrence Darmody.

We arranged to meet Peter in a side alley off the Corso on the Monday .. he had opted to quit his 'roving' and stay put, true to form there he was, avec his brass section (have names will put up later), we volunteered to be rent-a-crowd. Old favourites were enjoyed including, of course, Leadbelly.

Dave, Ross, Terry and I went to search for Tony Burkys .. Terry wandered off and I became nervous, my intuition was telling me that Terry was a 'necessary ingredient' and must not stray. How right I was!

When Terry returned to the fold, he was excited having just seen the Jugalug String Band, Philthy D and Chris Blanchflower. I managed to get a few shots off before Peter and the boys accompanied by Terry on harp broke into "Just a Closer Walk with Thee" .. ahh now tears were near. Must have a ciggie.

I glanced up and there was Terry and Peter side by side .. where's your camera girl??!! Dave's big fat head was in the way so I jumped up on the bench. God waved his hand, things just started happening - down the alley came John Mackey and his partner Yuki on tambourine they took up their positions alongside Terry as if prearranged .. then to top it off down the lane, strumming his guitar came Tony Burkys in all his glory. The lady seated beside me remarked that she could feel something strange and then asked, "what's happening, they seem to be really enjoying themselves?"

"These guys used to play together in their teens 40 years ago .. and the jam was not prearranged," I gasped.

Terry, by this stage had whipped out his kazoo, Peter had began doing a little two-step rasping away with gusto, and the grins on their faces .. just priceless.

Later, Tony later remarked that he was strolling by the lane and heard the kazoo and said to himself that could only be one person .. Terry Darmody. Much merth when Yuki whipped out her kazoo and matched Terry with an impromtu call-response routine.

"Hi Lynne, Dave Miller here, thanks for the e-mail regarding the re-union at Manly Jazz festival. we'll have to do some organising before I can tell you what day(s) that we'll be attending. Well, you will never guess who paid us a visit today. Yep, that's right, Phil and Lyn Wood. How amazing seeing Phil after 41 years! Prior to this my only memory of Phil was that of a frisky young motor bike riding devil may care teenager.

What a difference 41 years makes, seeing Phil the family man and his lovely wife Lynn He is very close to his youngest son Cassidy and spends a lot of time trout fishing in the Snowy mountains with him, as he and Errol did with their father who is still alive at 94 (and stills drives a car, amazing). After lunch we did a tour of our property and went up to our neighbours, 'Jeir Creek' winery, where they did some wine tasting. Although we didn't stop chatting the afternoon was way too short to talk about everything and we've invited them back for a longer stay and they have invited us to visit them up at Bellingen. And who was responsible for this reunion? You of course, you precious person! We couldn't thank you enough. I hope things are going well with you. Mindless and Cass

I first met Cass and Lesley in their flat at Coogee (I think), around 1970. They had a son Daniel, possibly the only couple at the time with a child and I was fascinated. One Sunday afternoon when Bob and I visited, Cass had just completed a census form, he had a strange twisted sense of humour and had written many strange responses to the questionaire .. I was impressed. Lesley and I met frequently at Brisbane Street Clinic and I found her to be a quick thinking, intelligent chick .. she was an eternal student. Lesley or 'Mindless' to her friends later blossomed as a Drug Councellor. Cass who can be contacted on Facebook is now a famous actor, with many films under his belt.

Just received the saddest news .. Lesley 'Mindless' Armstrong passed away July 26 2010 .. I have many photos of Cass and Lesley and will update post at a later date.

Johnny Patch RIP was my husband's mentor, Bob idolized him and was devastated when he died. The death of Roy Prestige aka 'Roy the Boy' RIPwas another shock to the system. I attended Roy and Margaret Buchman's wedding and reception with Steve 'Soc' O'Connor, Louise and Christine Lucas RIP (that's another story). Roy had been straight for many, many years and was doing quite well when he passed away. Who else, yes, of course Little Africa (mad as a hatter), last saw him around '78 at Central. and, little Heather Buchanan RIP and Penny Symes were certainly characters.

Regrettably I received a message from Russell James Walsh tonight accusing me of cheating him of his photos and calling me a thief. I thought we had an arrangement, but there you go. However, I see I had inadvertently omitted to credit the clippings of Normie to Russ, that he had painstakingly found and scanned from his grand collection of Go-Set magazines and uploaded to Facebook. My apologies Russell, I have removed the offending photos.

Normie Roue headed the unforgettable, aptly named Gutbucket band (previously Om De Com), with Danny Groves on drums at Beethovens 1967. Normie's gutsy version of "Louisana Red" still haunts me. Norm went onto Buffalo and Band of Light .. you can catch a glimpse of him playing magnificent slide with Russell James Walsh

Standing on my tippy toes, tears welling up in my eyes I strained to catch a glimpse of Little Normie ..

it was 1967/68 and Dal Myles had put on a special show at the the old Trocadero in George Street. Phil Jones from the Unknown Blues was unwell at the time and Little Normie from Gutbucket took over lead vocals. The reason for my tears? Well, I had been unceremoniously dumped by Norm the previous week and, a girl can be upset, can't she? I did run into Norm years later at The Village with his ever present cheeky grin, so here's to you Norm.

Peter 'Izzy Foreal' Knox' and Lynne Sanders-Braithwaite have arrived in the Lower Clarence Valley and have taken the area by storm, or did the storm take them?

A deluge of rain had recently occurred and the waters flooded the entire valley, Lynne and Izzy were the proud dwellers of a house in Ulmarra which was 'surrounded' by the Clarence River .. nevertheless, they soldiered on and became part of the community.

Downtown South Grafton is a hive of creativity - quite 'hippified' with its bazaars and arts 'n craft stores; hand-made leather goods .. three pubs and music coffee lounges featuring 'blues' entertainers.

Izzy has secured gigs at one of the restaurant venues, the Emporium Cafe ' with its amazing psychedelic bedouin tent decor is a relaxing and interesting eatery.' The curries are scrumptious and can be attributed to their knowledge in spices. Visit their site Emporium Cafe for more information.

Pulling up in the taxi I was met by a warm glow emanating from the premises ..t he venue was packed to the rafters, the music was up and away and I settled back for what I knew was going to be a delightful night. The entertainment was inspiring and a tribute to the hard work that has gone into making this restaurant a winner.

Izzy, sporting his new two-toned hair look, was the perfect MC and held the evening together nicely.

After a fulfilling night, Lynne S and Izzy toddled off home the proud owners of a crock pot (secured in the raffle) .. I arrived home satiated with pleasant food and memories of a wonderful evening in downtown South Grafton.

Over the past few years I have been reunited with old friends, but have also found many new friends that were connected in some fashion or other to the days at Taylor Square: Keith Herbert, Bruce Bongers, Rob Askew and Dave 'Flake' Allen ( I had the pleasure of meeting up with Dave at the 2009 Gosford Blues Festival)

Needs some tightening up in places. People seem to appreciate it. I haven't played it any whales yet. k."

Keith Herbert ... "Wally's Song" is teriffic! Camaraderie? is the theme for sure. The Sect were my fav. Oz band of the time and we regularly saw them at Rhubarbs and Vibes. I even played at Vibes once.

Heady stuff ... I'd love to meet Danny Groves and show him my "new" drum setups. I pinched some chops from him back then, so it's only fair. Maybe it can happen. I would love the Sect to reform if possible. My other current muso mates who missed them would be astonished, I'd say.

"I auditioned for Me ‘N Mine around 1970. They were so polite! (I didn't get the gig). Too bluesy I think.

Rob Askew and I jammed at a musos party prior to Christmas with Bruce Coble of The Beatels' http://www.beatels.com/ (the nearest thing to John Lennon still alive, according to Rob). We did 4 Lennon songs and it was very fulfilling for us both.

'Me'n'Mine was a little known rock band that performed around Sydney Australia during the heady days of 1966 and 1967. That term "rock band" was uncool at the time, it implied old time rock'n'roll, whereas Me'n'Mine was a "group". For reasons which will be explained below, they were called The Limmericks for the 2nd half of their short career. was never a band of guitar heroes - Clapton and Hendrix had not yet really hit the scene. Our strong point was our vocal harmony - you can still hear it in the recordings I made starting late 2004. Jimmy went on to Blackfeather and Flake, Rob and his brother Lindsay are still going strong. (in separate projects)."

The guy with the lovely voice you mentioned is Father Paul McCormack. He teaches at a boarding school in Toowoomba these days.

Me’n’Mine was active in 1966 and 67 just after we all left high school, we had a regular circuit of church youth dances that kept us in gigs. By 1971 we had all gone off in different directions and didn’t keep in contact, but that changed in about 2003. To cut a long story short, we had a reunion and I started working on music tracks so we could record some of our old songs. We only get together once or twice each year. Did you listen to the scratchy 1967 demo of "Dr Robert" ? The only member missing from our reunion was Jimmy Penson who died in 1981 – we recently located his sister and I’ve been to chat with her.

Your videos are marvellous, "Happy Together" made me cry .. what a lovely voice .. like an angel .. you all looked thoroughly mesmorized with it all .. and at the end someone says 'that was wonderful'. I was really moved. Loved the flourish in "Nowhere Man".

When I was in high school in 1965 at De La Salle Marrickville, for many classes I sat with Tony Asciak (now deceased) who was the rhythm guitarist for The Rogues. At the time they were a working band, playing such places as Beatle Village. Wayne Thomas was their drummer and Wayne “Spooky” Rountree was their excellent lead guitarist – those guys opened our eyes to the Yardbirds and The Zombies, and inspired us to have a go at it - they’re both still playing. So how cool did that make Tony? – a school chum in a working band. I used to pick Tony’s brain about all things relating to guitars and amplifiers, even borrowed his amp a few times. At the same time there was a guy from another class also picking Tony’s brain, his name was Phil Jones. I haven’t seen Phil since 1965, and he probably doesn’t remember us. Small world indeed.

Bruce Bongers ... "I have been following your blog. We have a lot of overlap in our experiences - although you started on the scene a little earlier (Surf City and Beatle Village - I was too young). My night life started at the Bowl before graduating to Rhubarbs, Beethoven's, Vibes, Here, etc. We have a number of mutual acquaintances; Terry Darmody, Peter Anson, Daryl McKenzie, Richard Rhule, Dave Allen, the King Bros - people that I've played with and socialised with over the years. I was also close to Mort and Wally in the 70's.

The website of my main current band is downhome.cjb.net .. I have some words somewhere where I attempted to record my impressions of the Sydney music scene in the sixties and the social context, including describing dress, dances and the tunes payed by the bands I saw. I can't find it at the moments but I will attempt to resurrect it (and correct it based on info from your site) some day.

I run into Terry sporadically. I am not a close friend. I did not see him perform until the early 70's in Uncle Bob's Band and sitting in with Blue Spirit/ Foreday Riders at French's. I am a great fan of his harmonica playing. He has connections to people I play with reasonably regularly like Peter Doyle, Don Hopkins and Richard Rhule.

Although I saw Peter Anson in the Id etc. in the day and later with the Unity Hall Band I did not personally know him until I played on and off with a band he was in the last 10 years. I run into him occasionally. Dave Allen used to play in my band, Fred Karniss Army, in the 60's but I haven't met him personally since then. I follow his blog. I played with Daryl in a soul covers band a few years ago. I know he was living in the Blue Mountains at that time. I don't have any contacts. Regards Bruce"

Tribute to Bob Dylan

How long were you all going to let me ramble without mentioning the undisputable demi-god Robert Zimmerman.

Bob Dylan was the common denominator - the link that bound us all together, he was the 'voice' of our times, putting our collective thoughts into words and music, What we, as a 'one offs', felt about love and life.

With his wry sense of humour he touched our young hearts. He wasn't a balladeer, pop, country, blues, folk or rock singer - He was, is and always will be, DYLAN .. God bless him.

Back to New Year's Day 1965 ... Walking into Graham's pad in Cremorne, I was greeted by the strains of Dylan., his talents was unknown to mainstream music in Australia in January, 1965.

Blowing his harmonica and pickin' on his guitar, as clear as all heck. I thought I had died and gone to heaven. We empathised and seethed with him in "Masters of War"

He astounded us with his astute story telling in "Talking World War 111", "Hard Rains A-Gonna Fall" and blew us away with "Oxford Town". I taught this tune to my young sister (who was 7 at the time). She still sings it, laughs and thanks me.

Hilarious to see guitar god Allan Mostert hiding behind the congas, obviously refusing to mime his guitar parts ... and isn't there a hint of irony in singer Shiv's face?'

Dear friends and lovers of QUINTESSENCE

A veritable tsunami of new live QUINTESSENCE material is about to crash on your earshores very soon: the blistering March 1970 St Pancras Town Hall show (or at least the 38 mins that remain) and over three hours worth of Queen Elizabeth Hall 1971 recordings, from two wholly unreleased concerts recorded the same day, all superbly recorded.

These have been licensed by Hux Records from Universal/Island with substantial sleevenotes by Colin Harper. Colin also unearthed a VHS of a 1971 LWT TV show on religious music featuring Q miming to "Dive Deep" and "Jesus, Buddha"... There is apparently more film around and we are happy to announce more to come in the not too distant future.

'09 Hillbilly Blues Bandit at Lennox Point Hotel

This was a task of love, it has taken the two of us forever to put it together .. Nanny Lynne is such a diva, she didn't like any of the photos of her taken with Izzy and Lynne - even photoshop couldn't alter them to her satisfaction! The videos were 'too orange', she couldn't find her notes yarta, yarta. We sure hope we have put together a post that will satisfy her .. fingers crossed.

Nanny Lynne is travelling up from Grafton to stay with us for the weekend (she was having one of her 'reunions') .. Peter 'Izzy Foreal' Knox is playing with his band the Hillbilly Blues Bandits at our local pub .. Lennox Point Hotel that is. Peter is a peer from the olden days (though their paths had crossed on many occasions, at the Ball Pants, French's Tavern and Whitty's Wine Bar) they were not formally acquainted.

Peter and his partner Lynne arrived at our house around 11 a.m., Nanny was so nervous she immediately put Izzy to work fixing Jye's guitar .. job done, introductions over .. they choofed off, arranging to meet later that afternoon for lunch at Lennox Beach Park. Lots and lots and lots of photos were taken, but as stated previously Nanny didn't like the snaps of her so we have selected what we considered to be complimentary.

Mummy and Nanny toddled off at eight anticipating the night ahead (we went to bed). I don't have many details of the night .. list of songs would be nice. I know they had a lovely night as Nanny was all smiles the next day.

Scrubby Pete Hurcombe, plays white-hot guitar & vocals, he has been playing various tunings on guitars since he was a kid, & as a result he is a great slide guitar exponent. He is the alchemist of the band & has played many festivals, & shows, selling his soul too often to remember, only for the love of roots music. He has played everywhere from Sydney to Coolangatta, Birdsville & Oodnadatta via the Simpson Desert to Fitroy Crossing, Derby & Broom, & up north to Bamaga at Cape York, but he still loves the chance to play live music.

Izzy Foreal, front man, Vocalist & Bass player from the Legendary Zarsoff Brothers Band has now joined the band after the passing of Rollin D Gale & is contributing his well honed skills to the line up. You can look him up on the web in many places! The Zarsoff’s were renowned throughout the 80’s for their bizarre onstage antics. They toured extensively throughout Oz. Their album Rude Awakening reached the album charts in 1984. Prior to this he had been a member of the Original Battersea Heroes, led by Terry Darmody & then in The 69ers’ line up by 1970. The 69ers played a riotous set at the second annual Sunbury festival in January 1973. Their track .. "Harry Rag'" appeared on the triple live set The Great Australian Rock Festival Sunbury 1973, issued by Mushroom. Festival also issued ..Harry Rag' as a single that month, backed with .. "Blood Flash" and .. "Rag Mama". A year later, Festival/Infinity issued the band's Sunbury set as the album Francis Butler's 69ers Live. Although he smells of success, he is quite a nice chap really!

Peter Jaggle, Director of DrumOz Percussion Solutions, obviously plays percussion on just about anything! He has composed film soundtracks for the ABC and NZBC, conducted workshops all over Australasia, & internationally & has played with John English, John Williamson, John Farhnam & Dionne Warwick to name a few Johns. He has played on stage and television in NZ, UK & Europe. He founded Young Drums School of Percussion, which has performed all over the Capitals of Oz & at the Aberdeen International Youth Festival in Scotland. PJ’s teaching methods have been endorsed and supported by most of the biggest names in percussion. Including:- Zildjian, PREMiER, SABIAN, MEINL, Mapex, TOCA, and ECO.

Hi there, it's me Brianna, bringing to you the Dylan Report. Nanny's off to Gosford, what can possibly go wrong this time. Well, everything of course!

Donning her new grey tracksuit, pink and grey jumper and matching pink Ugg boots, she toddled off at 9.00 pm.

She decided to take the short cut (across the grass) to Maccas and buy a Happy Meal.Was it happy, Nooooooooooo, not on your Nelly! She found herself ankle deep in mud and her lovely pink Ugg boots (now black) weren't impressed .. either was the assistant at Maccas that insisted on asking her what she wanted in her McValue Meal ... THAT ONE THERE $6.25!!!! Why are you charging me $7.25 Nanny wanted to know ..

Sludging off to Grafton Station she was informed that there were no trains tonight and to make matters worse she wasn't even on the manifest as a passenger. An argument ensued and she was 'permitted' to board the coach. It was a painful journey as Nanny can't sit without a great deal of pain. She was dumped at Gosford Station at 5.00 am, it was bitterly cold and she had a two hour wait until the Hotel Gosford opened. Did it open - NOT!

Back again at 9.00 am she was horrified to find that she was not registered for a room. It was like a bad 'mushroom trip', did she exist at all? Matter solved, it was indeed Saturday morning and NOT Friday as she had thought! Well, this explained her 'missing' train reservation.

Sleeping until 5.00 pm she hurriedly dressed and taxied off to the Gosford RSL, there she was greeted by Rod 'Beachhead' Jeffery .. had she missed much? Not really, so that was OK. Rod introduced her around and she became acquainted with Dave 'Flake' Allen (pictured to the left) and his two mates Rod and Frank (ex President of the JOK Fan Club) no less. They were chatting about the olden days when Dutch Tilders was spotted, apparently he was to be a surprise for Beachie's birthday. The guys pressured her to go over and introduce herself.

Nothing is worse than bad blues, however, highlights were 'Chase the Sun' a group of young up and comings, (side viewe of the lead guitarist, no other photos could be taken as her batteries were 'exhausted'.

Beachie stunned the crowd he has the of an angel.

Dutch Tilders and Jim Conway (ever greats), and a pianist Ali Penney were outstanding. She had missed the Foreday Riders and Phil Colson so that was disappointing, catching up with Dave 'Flake' Allen and Rod 'Beachhead' Jeffery made it all worth while.

Beachie. along with his 'makeshift' band, the evergreen Dutch 'Keep the Faith' Tilders, Gary Dale on lead (worth a listen to, his style is unique and I was impressed), Raoul on bass, Ali Penney showed her personality on the keyboard, Adam Barnard, proved to be an exceptionally skilled drummer, (youngest son of Australian jazz trumpeter, Bob Barnard). The harp player did his thing impressively, his name as yet is unknown.

Mal Eastick next - bored with 'city' blues, she went and played the pokies and won $700!! After costs she was $200 up!!

Partying 'til all hours with 'Ghost Road', Beachie and Dutch. Sharing grand memories of the Royal George and Shane Duckham was an experience she will never forget.

Nanny awoke feeling quite nauseated and struggled (as best a hung-over bod can) home. All up she had 4 1/2 rums - the old girl ain't what she used to be.

Did I mention that at midnight after two rums in 6 hours she was asked to leave the RSL for being intoxicated. She brought an array of bar staff to back up her 'sober' story and was permitted to stay. 'Sorry' didn't stop her heart thumping at a grand old rate.

The burning question, and one of the great mysteries of '67, (besides 'Where was MacArthur Park and Who was Jude?') is, 'Who were the young couple that arrived Friday nights and stayed behind when we all piled into Frank Cayley's car and choofed off to Vibes'?

I have been in touch with Sue Kielt nee Toohey, (my flat mate at the time), she doesn't have a clue. She and her partner Danny Groves (ex Sect, Climax 5), do, however, recall arriving home from a gig and finding me lying on the floor along with The Nutwood Rug and people trapsing from room to room looking very blurry eyed.

An email arrived this week from Dave 'Sons' Miller, none other than the male half of the 'stay at homes'! He said, very little privacy was had by him and his girlfriend Jacquie McGarry, (now his wife) as, 'people tended to use the bedroom window as an egress, even though the front door was in perfectly good working order!'.

Berry Street was a three bed-room duplex in North Sydney; bereft of carpets, minimal furniture and an empty fridge - the only thing of note was my granma's pianola. 'unaccountability' is the word that comes to mind when I recall Berry Street.

My Dad had secured the flat for me to share with my friends Sue, Margot and Diane .. 'our first real flat' . Along with our new found freedom and rations of Vita-wheats and grated Kraft cheese came hoards of peoplem, chosen for their particular querks or talents.

Frank Cayley the Beatnik was older than us, and held a driver's license. He had been part of The Royal George crew in the olden days and played bass guitar. Friday nights Frank provided the wheels to transport us into 'Vibes', a dance venue in an abandoned office block near the Capital theatre.

Occasionally I medicated a little too early and get side-tracked sorting through my old 45s and spent the night in the bathroom cleaning the tiles with a toothbrush!

VIBES Frank Martin was the doorman, peering at us from behind his cubicle, he graciously accepted our $2 entrance fee (or was it $1), and two by two we flew fly up tthree flights of stairs, by-passing the lounge and refreshment's room to a huge expanse of dance floor, an elevated stage stood at one end.

A Chicago blues style band The Sect were the resident band.

Mick Lester (vocals and harp), several interchanging lead guitars, including Neil Smith, Paul Baker and Kim Humphries, Mick Morphett (bass), Ross Linton (rhythm), Vaughan Bros on organ and drummers Michael McCormack and Danny Groves.

Special guests included The Nutwood Rug (a wild looking bunch of guys from California), Dr. Kandy's Third Eye and Alison MacCallum.

The area was soon packed and the ear-shattering sound of The Sect blasted covers from Paul Butterfield, John Mayall, Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix.

Paul and Neil hammering out Clapton's "Stepping Out" was the highlight of the night.

End of the set, I scarpered down the stairs to loll and chat on the sofas that Frank had kindly put there for my convenience .. , Lex Mesker the roadie treated us to 'underground' music over the PA: Janis Joplin's Big Brother and the Holding Company, Frank Zappa and the Mother's of Invention ("Suzie Creamcheese"), Jimi Hendrix 'Experience', John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers, Fleetwood Mac and Grace Slick & Jefferson Airplane.

Lex took great pride in his record collection.

Straggling off to The Greenwood Tree to watch Peter Anson was our next port of call, arriving there well after midnight we caught the last set and then headed home to Berry Street dragging half of Sydney with us. Granma's pianola, that Dad had kindly given me, was centre stage with performances by Doggie or the odd concerto by Margot. Phil, Merv and Mort often entertained us with their skits from Monty Python or The Goons, the night culminating in a free for all jam.

Saturday arvos various bands practised in the lounge room, by late afternoon we prepared for a return trip to Vibes. On Sundays we hosed out the flat then lazed in the sun (until the floor dried), in various yoga positions .. "Hey Jude", "Light my Fire" and "MacAuthur Park" drifted from the radio.

Pete, Frank and Phil headed off to England, Sue and Danny took off for the Snowy and I moved to a flat in Bardsley Gardens with Diane and Ned. Diane later headed over to England to meet up with the boys and my grandma's pianola disappeared, those were the hazy days.

This week has been very eventful beginning with an email from my school pal, Sue .. we shared several flats together: Neutral Bay, Mosman, North Sydney, Paddington and Ultimo. Sue teamed up with Danny Groves and they took off for a gig in the Snowy I haven't seen them for over 40 years!

I have attached some great photos of The Sect with Dan. After leaving The Sect, Danny played with The Climax (line-up included Nick Dunn, Dave Fookes and Frank Galea) .. they made a recording and spent quite a bit of time at the Manly Pacific .. Dan followed up with a stint in the original Jesus Christ Superstar and toured with the production .. then, some time in the Jon English Band and various others. cheers Susie."

Neil Smith-lead guitar ... "Hi Lynne, I haven't caught up with Mick Morphett yet but I will soon. I don't recall a lot about Jim Carter except for the period which started with Rhubarbs Cnr Barry St and Military Rd, Neutral Bay. I think it would have been 1965. It looked like a great venue when we auditioned for him, it had an upstairs area with the centre of the floor cut out so youcould see the band. I think I remember seeing Jeff St. John & the Id there. Jim loved our playing but said we looked too young, however he was opening a new Rhubarbs in about a year and to get in touch then.

That was the Rhubarbs near the corner of Sussex and Liverpool Sts, down a little lane called Douglass St.

At the time the M 'n' J Sect consisted of Mike Lester (vocals, harm), Mick Morphett (bass), Mick McCormack (drums), Jim McCormack (guitar) and Neil Smith (guitar). We found this little 'disco' in a double garage in Brookvale, in the Waringah Mall car par, it was called The Blue Note, run by a guy called Jerry Voermans. He had about 2 people drinking coffee there at peak time so we offered him a deal .. we'd play there for half the door. Jerry looked at his 2 customers, smiled and we all shook hands.

The two people Neil referred to were none other than my cousin Cheryle & myself .. lynk!

The McCormacks and other partners in crime got together a poster and plastered it around all the local girls' schools and soon the place was full. The Double garage space quickly doubled again so we filled it by throwing a 'pyjama' party and leaking this to the Sunday Mirror. Next Sunday photos appeared all over Pages 1, 2 and 3 of the outrageous scene. Now you couldn't get into the Blue Note and of course Jerry wanted to re-negotiate our deal. In the end we decided to hold a band competition to decide who would replace us in the revised deal. I think Jim Kelly may have been in the replacement band and we met a guy called Steve Kipner who had a band call Steve and the Board. His father was Nat Kipner and he ran the St Clare recording studio in Hurstville. We recorded there later with Danny Groves, but without the McCormacks.

Keith Herbert ... "Wally's Song" is teriffic! Camaraderie? is the theme for sure. The Sect were my fav. band of the time and we regularly saw them at Rhubarbs and Vibes.I even played at Vibes once. Heady stuff...I'd love to meet Danny Groves and show him my "new" drum setups. I pinched some chops from him back then, so it's only fair. If Lynne wants to pass on my number maybe it can happen. Alex Mesker ... "Hello Lynne, it was Mike Lester who prompted me to look on line when he asked me about how we met and how did he meet Neil Smith. He is writing his musical memoirs at the moment and time does distort one's view.

Yes, I was the Vibes DJ that played all the music in the breaks. when the Sect were on, I used to sing harmony with Mike from the back room LOL. I tried to bring new sounds and hard to get music into Vibes. It was a great place.

I was introduced to Mike by Neil who I had met at a Matriculation Course. Mike and I had been best friends ever since then (1966). They were playing the Blue Note at Brookvale at the time and I did the roadie work (as I had a ute).

Throughout the years, the Sect had lots of different lineups and when the McCormack brother left, Danny Groves came in on drums. I remember a 3 member horn section as well as the addition of a keyboard player. There was a rhythm guitar player in there somewhere too, other than Paul Baker and Neil Smith .. but not at the same time. I'd lit to catch up with Danny if possible .. we lost contact when the band folded. I think that he was a friend of Rodney Phillips as well and I think that they worked for the PMG or Telstra now as telephone exchange technicians. If Danny is cool to hook up, feel free to give him my email address.

Mike Lester got married in 1970 and finished an engineering degree. He had lost interest in the band, from memory, and headed to Darwin to work in Water Resources. Even though Mike and I have been friends for all these years, we did go for some time without seeing each other (working overseas), but were always in contact. About 15 years ago, Mike moved back to Sydney with his family and I invited him to join a band in which I was playing guitar. That band has been together and playing as a unit and playing since then ... giggling whenever and whenever and wherever. Mike still has a BIG boice and gets a glorios harp sound as well.

18 months ago, Mike and his wife relocated to New York. He often sings with a band call Small Time Leroy and they play the BB King Club in NY. We, the remaining band members have ontinued as a trio but, whenever Mike comes back to Sydney, however briefly, we get together and play .. gig if possible.

I got an email from him last night telling me that he and his wife were flying back to Sydney and arriving Friday. Yeah, he asked could we get together again while he is here. I dont know if you remember me but I was/am very tall 6'6" and had wavy dark hair (sometimes an afro) and moustache, as we all did them. Hair now grey. Most of my friends called me Lex but I go as Alex now. If you want some pics, let me know. I have some current band pics as well regards Alex."

Nanny Lynne has writer's block.

On the train she teamed up with a guy who had been a camera man at Channel 7 in the '60s, he was doing a documentary on the history of Taylor's Arm as told by the locals!! Taylor Square - Taylor's Arm, well, she never!

Was it a trouble free journey? .. Noooooo way, the Pete Seeger 'For Pete's Sake' Celebration had been cancelled and, Nanny Lynne forgot her mobile, so was unable to arrange a meeting with Larry Knight and Peter Gatehouse .. 'It's not the destination it's the journey' she reminded herself.

Assuming her 'Taylor Square Historian' personae cum photographer she embarked on a series of chance meetings .. Vittorio at the Piccolo Bar welcomed 'the celebrity from the bush' with open arms, well, after all, she was a friend of the famous actor Beatnik Cass (noted for his bit parts in various Aussie movies) .

"Daahling, you just missed Jeanne Lewis by 5 mins, but she will be back," gushed Vittorio, as if Nanny had never left the place 30 years ago. Handing her a book by Rowan Hagan, he toddled off to make her fruit juice! The title, 'Darlo', (set in the '80s) caught her attention - just the year she had left the Cross behind.

Gesticulating in a 'stylish' fashion (forever the gay old chap) he proceeded to load her up with postcards, posters, fairy wings (appropriately coloured pink) and last but not least, a very large T-shirt with the Pet Shop Boys logo imprinted on the front. Looking up from the book, she ungraciously remarked "now I have to find a fat gay friend to give it to". Nobody was amused so she buried her head back in the book.

One of the patrons asked amicably if she was 'waiting for an Internet root' laughingly, she turned to the room and denounced the offender who then made a hasty exit.

Nan was refused entry to the photographic exhibition at the King's Cross Library, "but I used to work in this building, I am an original local", she protested. Trudging back to the Piccolo she told her woes to Vittorio. "Anyone want to take this lady to the exhibit?", he yelled. A young 'un named Adrian volunteered, and off she toddled to the judging of the exhibit (with the judge, no less!). Gaining entry with Adrian by her side was a cinch. "This is my good friend Gillian" he announced to the lady pointing at Nanny Lynne.

Nanny Lynne, did a calculation of presented photos, noted her opinions and occupied herself videoing the comings and goings from the tobacconist shop on Darlinghurst Road.

Back at the Piccolo Bar her valued opinions were listened to by noted photographer Glen Lockitch .. all was well. Glen was photographing Woolloomooloo, so much was had in common.

'Vitti' (as she familiarly called the owner of the Piccolo Bar by now), was a hoot. "Bloody foreigners" he spat out in his accent with a distinct Italian flavour. He was referring to the hapless line of people applying for a flat in Ward Avenue.

"Stop" he screamed at a local identity riding passed. "Smile, Lynne (as he familiarly called Nanny) would like to take your photo" .. the also hapless Animal as he was fondly named paused midst traffic and smiled politely for Nanny. Gosh, was there no end to her 'new found status'.

Off to photograph the few remaining familiar sites around the Cross.

... hobbling back to the Backpackers on Victoria Street avec blisters, what to do! Thongs, yes thongs that's what she needed. Ah, hell, where's the thong shop? A British tourist informed Nanny that thongs could be purchased in tourist shops or supermarkets - of course, silly Nanny.

Sporting her new thongs - a nice pair, olive green suede she headed for Farrell Avenue (behind the site of the old King's Cross Post Office). The thongs had a short life, trodden on by a heavy footed Asian, another thong shop was needed. Good, an import shop in Oxford Street 'Thongs $5' they'll do the trick. Turns out it wasn't the Diplomat she was to photograph it was Tennyson .. ah well next time.

Saturday night, off to Annandale Bluegrass Society monthly meeting. Nanny sang exhuberantly at the rehearsal of The Sinners chorus, (she was asked to sing as guest artist the next meeting, she declined). Then Doug DeKroo caught her eye and she was off yelling "move aside groupie coming thru'', this was met with laughter.

Sunday was spent with Terry Darmody and family, they met up with a very handsome Peter Nehil (washboard player Original Battersea Heroes) who informed her that Peter Anson had just left - drats, oh, and that he was now married, to which she replied "Never mind, I can wait another 40 years".
